It can be confusing choosing your software platform when starting out with your first blog or website. Especially when the most popular blogging platform has two names!? However, it is critically important to understand that WordPress.com and wordpress.org are two very different platforms. In this blog post, we will explore the difference between WordPress .org vs WordPress .com and which platform is best for you!

WordPress .org Vs WordPress .com

Please note: This post contains affiliate links, whereby I receive a small commission from any purchases that you make from the external links.

WordPress .org

Firstly, WordPress .org AKA the REAL WordPress is an open-source 100% free software.

With WordPress .org YOU host your own blog or website. This means that to able to use a WordPress .org platform for your blog or website, you would need to purchase your website hosting, along with your domain name.

What is website hosting?

Think of your website hosting like your own little piece of the internet, a space of digital real estate where you can plant your website for people to discover. Website hosting sounds more complicated then it is. Although there are many companies with expensive website hosting, there are also very affordable options for your website hosting.

Some companies provide website hosting on a monthly basis, whereas you also have the option to pay for 1 year, 2 years or even more for your hosting package. Generally, the longer that you pay, the cheaper that it becomes overall.

Most website hosting companies include the ability to install WordPress .org onto your website for no extra cost. In addition, when choosing your website hosting company, it is also important to check whether they include an SSL certificate with your hosting.

What is an SSL certificate?

This used to be an optional feature for websites to have, however, if you want your website to appear high in search engine results pages such as Google, then having an SSL certificate is now mandatory for your website. An SSL Certificate is basically a piece of code on your web server that provides security.

What is a domain name?

A domain name, also known as a web URL, is a unique address used to visit and view a website. This is entered into the URL bar at the top of your web page.

There are many different extensions available when choosing your domain name, such as .com, .org, .net etc. As a general rule of thumb, try to stick with a .com domain name, as this is the most universal name for websites!

E.g. mywebsite.com

Where can I find affordable web hosting?

There are many options for web hosting, and these can depend on your requirements.

More often than not, for an average blog or website, you should be okay with the cheaper packages. These include a shared server, a certain amount of space on your server and extra features such as an SSL certificate. However, you can always pay a little more to upgrade your hosting in time, as your website grows larger.

I have tried a variety of different web hosting companies and I have found that having quick customer support is a very important factor. This is why I recommend the web hosting company Hostgator.

I switched to Hostgator and I have never looked back!

They provide an affordable service with fast customer support, along with everything that I require for my web hosting including a free installation of WordPress .org. Furthermore, they also supply a FREE SSL Certificate with their web hosting!

The company that I was previously with was charging me an additional £50 per year for the SSL Certificate so this was certainly a bonus.

Hostgator currently offer a great web hosting package for beginners or smaller blogs/ websites. This is the Hatchling Plan, which includes hosting for 1 website, free WordPress .org installation and a free SSL Certificate, currently from $2.75 per month.

Click here for more information on the Hatchling Plan!

60% Web Hosting Coupon With Hostgator

I currently have an awesome deal with Hostgator that I am excited to share with you!

WordPress .org Pros & Cons

Pros

Free software.

Easy to use.

You own your website and the data. The site cannot be turned off, you have full control.

You can monetise your site by running your own ads and you keep all the revenue.

Can utilise powerful tools such as google analytics for tracking.

You can create an online store to sell digital or physical products and manage shipping from your site.

Ability to create membership sites e.g. to build an online community or sell a course.

You have access to backend code and databases.

Ability to upload your own themes (a great advantage!)

You can upload your own plugins.

Can use your own custom domain name for your website URL.

Usually unlimited hosting storage.

Access to all SEO features.

Cons

Cost of website hosting which is usually, $3-$10 per month depending on the package. Remember to use my coupon code 60HGSDN for 60% off web hosting with Hostgator.

You are responsible for updates & backups, important for avoiding being hacked!

Wow, as you can see there are a lot of benefits of using the WordPress .org platform.

To conclude, WordPress .org is a professional platform and essential if you want to take yourself and your website/blog seriously. The initial outgoings for your web hosting and a domain name is a small price to pay for such a great platform!

WordPress .com

In contrast to what a lot of people think, WordPress .com is a web hosting service created by Matt Mullenweg, a co-founder of WordPress. Not to be confused with the WordPress .org software.

WordPress .com takes care of the hosting for you. Whereby you don’t have to download or pay for anything, however the features with WordPress .com are basic as you would expect with a free service. Free plans are a subdomain of WordPress .com.

E.g. mywebsite.wordpress.com

The WordPress .com hosting service has 5 plans:

Free – Very limited.

Personal 6GB space– $36 per year

Premium 13Gb space– $99 per year

Business unlimited– $299 per year

Pros

WordPress .com is free with up to 3GB of space. Which is great for hobby bloggers.

A quick setup.

WordPress .com takes care of updates so you don’t have to worry about it.

Cons

Limited features.

WordPress .com places ads on all free sites. Therefore your users will see ads on your site, and you don’t receive any money from these ads. Furthermore, to avoid ads, you need to upgrade to a paid plan.

You are not allowed to sell ads on your website. The only option is to apply for a program called WordAds, an advertising program where you share the revenue with WordPress .com.

You have no unique domain name.

There are no plugins available.

There is no access to code or databases.

Very limited theme options.

You are restricted to their stats, with no access to google analytics.

The risk that your site can be deleted at any time and you have no control.

Your site displays a “powered by wordpress.com” link. You can only remove it by upgrading to the business plan.

No e-commerce features.

As you can see, there are many disadvantages to the free WordPress .com software.

The Difference Between WordPress .org Vs WordPress .com

In conclusion, WordPress .com is suitable for a hobby website or a personal blogger.

If you want something more professional, or you are a blogger that wants to make money from your blog. Then you will need a self-hosted website where you can install and use the WordPress .org software. Check out Hostgator to get started with affordable web hosting.

Although WordPress .com offer advanced features through their business plan ($299 per year), you can still gain much more for less money with a self-hosted WordPress .org website. Which is usually around $150 per year.

You can always start a blog with WordPress .com and if you want to move to a professional self-hosted WordPress .org site in the future, you can simply export your existing blog posts, and upload them to your new website.

A good way of understanding the difference between WordPress .com and WordPress .org is by thinking of them as a house…

WordPress .com is like renting a house, you don’t have control and you have limited power.

Whereas with WordPress .org, it is like owning your house. You have access to everything, full control and no one can tell you to leave.

Struggling with bloggers writer’s block? In this blog post, you will learn 11 different ways to find writing inspiration for your blog posts!

11 Quick Ways To Gain Writing Inspiration For Blog Posts

Please note: This blog post contains affiliate links

1. Why do you write?

Sometimes when we get a little lost for writing inspiration, it is a great idea to start with why we write in the first place! Try out this exercise to help wake up your writing muse, and to generate some writing inspiration for your blog posts.

Answer this question with, “I write because…” keep your hand moving, don’t pause to read what you have written. Don’t cross anything out or edit as you write. Don’t worry about spelling, grammar or punctuation. Loose control, don’t think and don’t get logical. Write a blog post collating what you have written in answer to this question, and what you have discovered about your writing.

Link back to this post, or add a comment below linking to your post to share what you have created.

2. Create a list

This is another brilliant exercise to help your writing inspiration to flow.

Write a list of nouns to help trigger stories and title ideas. Be personal, for e.g. ” 10 things [your name] likes…”

If you blog about educational or industry related posts, make a list of what you have learned and skills you have gained in your field. Use this list to inspire a post based on a list item. E.g. If you wrote/ have learnt about a style of knitting, share that with your audience. Alternatively, you could share how you learn it, whether it is a necessary skill etc.

I would recommend using Evernote to record your lists and notes!

3. 1-Word inspiration

This technique is one of my favourites for creating new ideas and prompts for writing inspiration, both for blog posts and writing in general! Have a go and let me know in the comments what creative ideas you come up with!

Create a prompt box. This can be as simple as an old tea box with “prompts’ written on it. Write prompts on slips of paper, consisting of 1 word, or even short phrases. If you get stuck thinking of words, refer to www.oneword.com for ideas.

Be creative and write something related to your prop. If you blog about particular niches or a certain industry, try to write many slips of industry/ niche related words and phrases.

When you receive your prompt, use your senses. What do you think about that prompt? What do you see, hear, feel, smell or remember?

Get creative!

4. Use An Image Prompt

This style of prompt may appeal more to you if you are more visually creative and artistic!

Use an image as your focal point for your writing. This could be for an informative blog post, a poem or even a short story. Allow the image to serve as your prompt, to guide your writing and to tell your tale.

There are many online websites where you can source free professional images. Make sure that you check the copyright, and whether you will need to add a link to the website where you downloaded the image.

I recommend the following website for beautiful free imagery;

unsplash

pixabay

5. Use a quote

A great way to help find writing inspiration for your blog posts from words other people have used.

Quotes are a wonderful way to find inspiration. You can find suitable quotes for your cause or a quote that supports your brand or that is aligned with your personality. For e.g. a quote on; happiness, spirituality, funny, inspirational, motivational, help grief etc.

Simply carry out a Google search for a relevant quote, alternatively visit; www.goodreads.com/quotes… or www.brainyquote.com

You can include the quote in your blog post by using the blockquote, and elaborate or explain why you have chosen the quote. I would recommend linking back to where you originally sourced your quote from.

Connect with the quote that you have chosen, and tell your readers why.

6. Ask your readers

If you are struggling with writer’s block for your blog, one of the best ways to overcome this is to simply ask your readers what they enjoy. Afterall, unless you enjoy writing for yourself alone, your readers are your audience.

You can write a blog post for your readers and ask them what do they want to read more about? If you currently blog about a variety of different niche topics, this is an effective way of narrowing your focus and growing your blog more in the direction that your readers will appreciate.

Alternatively, if you have an email list, you can write to your readers. If you don’t want to receive lots of wordy messages back, consider creating a poll or a survey.

Try to keep your questions open so that you can get an insight into what your readers want, rather than receive a very boring yes / no survey response.

For surveys, check out SurveyMonkey… alternatively you can create a poll at polldaddy.com… Remember to invite suggestions and ideas from your readers, to help you create a blog post writing content plan!

7. Let social media inspire you

Similar to the quote technique, and writing inspiration found through images, however with this option, you can take it one step further and find inspiration from recent posts on social media.

For e.g. If you want to find a quote or niche/ industry related comment, I would recommend using Twitter. Do a search for your word, e.g. #quote… and find a relevant tweet that speaks to you.

You can embed the URL of the tweet into your post. Even better, you could even message the person who originally posted that tweet to share your post with them. This will help to build a community around your blog and connect in the online social world.

Alternatively, using the same idea of searching for your keyword, you could use the social network Instagram. Filled with beautiful images from around the world, you are bound to find an image from your keyword that wakes up your muse and inspires you to write.

8. Go offline

I personally find this simple but effective technique extremely useful to help generate some writing inspiration for blog posts.

In contrast to the writing tip above, this option encourages you to go offline and seek inspiration from the real world. Find somewhere suitable, perhaps a cosy warm coffee shop that smells of fresh pastries, or if it’s a beautiful summers day a simple park bench with the singing birds would be great.

Sit with your laptop, tablet or pen and paper and observe the scene before you. What do you see, hear, smell, feel, taste?

Be an observer of the world around you, pay attention and let the scene write itself.

9. Express in poetry

To help find blog writing inspiration, sometimes it can be beneficial to try something new! You don’t have to create a sonnet or worry about making a masterpiece which will challenge the likes of Shakespeare, simply have fun sharing your writing in a different way.

If the idea of poetry makes you feel a little uncomfortable, try a haiku! A Japanese poem which covers 3 lines in the syllable count of 5/7/5.

You could make this about, well any topic you like really. If you blog about educational or informative industry related topics, what better way to shake up your style and attract your readers. You could even create a challenge from it, share an industry-related tip in a haiku, and get your blogging community to join in!

Allow your writing to bring joy and fun and you will soon be filled with more blog writing inspiration.

10. Old becomes new

Dig through your archives for older blog content to help generate new ideas for blog writing inspiration.

I find that spider diagrams come in extremely useful for this! You could even prioritise previous posts that have been more popular among your readers; received more shares/ comments etc.

Write down the titles of previous posts as the centre topic in your sider diagram. Build on these previous posts with related ideas for new content. Before you know it, you will have lots of ideas for new writing inspiration for your blog!

11. Publish a roundup

Another great tool for blog writing inspiration, you can create a roundup in many ways including;

-The best of [your blog name]. Publish a post linking to different blog articles that you have created, such as the best of range, most useful blog posts for your blog niche, most popular blog posts etc. (referring to your analytics for details).

– Create a list of links to other peoples blog posts that you have read and loved, or blog posts that you found interesting and useful. Include a quote from each post into your post.

– A selection of your favourite quotes. Using the tools from the previous point about quotes, or referring to social media to find quotes, publish a roundup of your favourite quotes.

Have you just created your first blog? Or perhaps you have had a break and need a refresher to improve your blogging game! Regardless of your situation, you will benefit from some fundamental blogging for beginners tips!

In this post, I am going to share with you 7 fundamental tips, aimed at blogging for beginners. These are designed to help you to craft and create a solid foundation for your blog. Whether you intend to grow your blog into a business and make money blogging. Or whether you are happy blogging for the love of it!

Here are 7 blogging for beginners fundamentals to help you on your blog journey.

Blogging for Beginners: 7 Fundamental Blog Tips

This blog post contains affiliate links.

1- Your Blog Identity

By now, you should have an idea of what you are going to blog about, and what your main niche is.

If like me, you can get spoilt for choice on which of your hobbies or passions to share, as a general guide, it is advised to have 1 or 2 main niche topics for your blog. This is because it will help you to attract the right readers for your blog, and after all, blogging is about sharing your written content with your audience!

E.g. If you are interested in the topic Yoga, which of the following blogs would you be more interested in reading;

Blog 1: A blog about Yoga and Meditation
Blog 2- A blog about Yoga, healthy eating, climbing and horse riding.

I don’t know about you, but I would definitely choose Blog 1. It is more specific to what I am looking for in a Yoga blog.

Choosing a niche for your blog does not limit you, your niche will develop into sub-topics within your chosen main topic. Using our example of yoga, the blog can then be broken into the following sub-topics; types of yoga, pregnancy yoga, yoga philosophy etc.

Having a foundational niche and main topic for your blog is very important. Not only to attract the right readers to your blog but also, having a solid topic will give you focus on your writing, helping you to create a fantastic blog!

Already know your Blog niche and main topic? Brill!

Share your blog’s identity by using your niche keywords in your site title and your tagline.

If you need some help finding where you can enter these details, I would recommend installing the Yoast plugin, which is brilliant for optimising the SEO on your blog. A very important blogging for beginners fundamental!

2- Identify Your Blog Audience

Blogs are all about identity. Above we identified the blog itself, in this section, we will identify who the blog is for. After all, knowing the identity of who you are writing for will help you to write effectively for that audience.

So how do we identify our audience? In the online marketing world, there is an in-depth procedure for identifying your audience, which involves creating buyer personas and developing buyer stories. Perhaps this is something to look into as your blog develops and grows, however at this stage, I feel that there is a more simple path to identifying your audience.

Start off with a pen and paper, and write in the middle, “Who Do I Write For?”… Working with this spider diagram, write down as the ideas and thoughts come to your mind, your ideal dream readers.

Using our example of a Yoga blog, the audience identity for this blog may include;

– A reader wanting to lose weight and feel more confident
– Somebody who is working a very busy lifestyle in the city, and craves some peace and stillness.
– A mother to be who is interested in alternative ways to prepare her body for the birth.

Before you know it, ideas will keep coming and you will have a spectrum of audience identities. You can even take this further by creating demographics to each identity such as; age, job role etc. Relating to your blog niche.

By creating an identity for your audience, this really helps you to write your blog posts specifically for your audience. It will help you to connect with your audience and also help to grow your trust and relationships.

3- Love Your Blog Theme

We have developed our blogs written identity, now it is very important to make sure that the design of your blog reflects this. If you have not changed your theme, you probably have the standard default WordPress theme, and if you like this theme, then that’s okay. However, if you want your blog to have a unique design, it is important to choose a theme that speaks to you.

There are many free themes available to choose from. If you want something more unique, I would recommend looking at themes for sale, there are so many available and many that are pretty straightforward to edit and make your own.

Elegant Themes is a great place to start. They have a range of themes available from their website, and they also offer friendly support with their services. I have been with Elegant Themes for a few years and I love using them. I favour the DIVI theme, which allows a lot of customisation and the ability to truly create your own unique design. However, if you are not keen on customising themes, you would prefer to choose something and get on with writing, I would choose a different theme. Click here to check out amazing blog themes from Elegant Themes!

Check out some demos, have fun with it! Themes are a great way to reflect your blog identity. For instance, I won’t find a Yoga blog as attractive to read if it had a dark busy theme. On the other hand, a Yoga blog with a clean, light design and lots of whitespaces would be very attractive.

4- Publish an About Page

An About Page can often be underestimated and avoided. People sometimes think, “Who wants to read about me”… or… “I prefer to not share too much about myself”… On the contrary, an About page is often the most important page on a blog.

An About page gives you the chance to share the purpose of your blog, to share your blog’s mission and to inspire readers to join you for your blogging journey. Quite often when a person visits a new blog, they may read a post and then go to the about page to see whether it is worth returning to the blog for future posts.

An important blogging for beginners task. If you have not currently got an About page, now is a good time to create one!

Tips for creating a Blog About page

Even though this page may lead you to believe that it can be all about you, that’s not entirely true. Try to make the about page relate to your audience.

For e.g.

– Share the main intention, purpose and mission of your blog

– Share a short background of yourself, but always keep the content relating to your blog.

– If you encountered a problem with your blog topic, and solving that problem is what lead you to create the blog in the first place, share that on your about page. By writing about problems you faced and inspirations that you had to begin your blog, will help to connect with your readers, as they may have faced a similar problem.

– Connecting with your readers is key on an about page. A reader will be more inclined to follow your blog if they can relate to your personal story. But if they are reading about your dog’s names, your favourite food, how many illnesses you have had, blah blah blah etc. Which doesn’t relate to your niche, this might push them away.

– Be authentic. Being genuine and relaxed with your writing will help your readers to feel relaxed. Write as though you are writing to a friend.

– Break up paragraphs. Big chunks of text can switch off the brain and scare readers away.

– Include links to your favourite blog posts, or most useful blog posts. Linking to your own content is a great way to drive readers to your posts and to help your blogs SEO.

5- Get Inspired & Build A Blogging Community

A big part of blogging is the community. Over time, established bloggers tend to build relationships with other bloggers in their niche. This can lead to blogging opportunities such as; more traffic to your blog, being able to feature other people on your blog in an interview, or you being featured on other blogs etc.

To lay the foundations for your blogging community, the first step is finding inspiration. Look for other blogs similar to your own. You can search for other blogs in a number of ways including;

– Google search for keywords, for e.g. A blog about yoga
– Facebook; If you are a member of Facebook, you can search for a facebook group containing your blog niche keyword.
– Pinterest; Search for pins relating to your niche.
– YouTube; There is a massive increase yearly in vlogs and video. Doing a search on YouTube for your blog and topic keyword may help to find other similar blogs.

Once you have found some blogs, check them out! Look at their posts, theme, design, about page etc. This exercise is not about judging or looking for content to copy, but merely researching other similar blogs to your own, see what they’re doing and find some inspiration for yourself. If you read a post that you enjoy, leave them a comment and let them know! These are the first steps to building your blog community. By commenting on their blog, they may check out your own blog. If they are on social media, why not follow them?

Building an online community is another blogging for beginners fundamental and is key to building your own blog.

6- Use a Blog Writing Prompt

Sometimes, in the beginning, it can be difficult to think of specific posts to write about for your blog. Or perhaps you are spoilt for choice and need some focus for a blog post idea. Either way, this technique will help you to come up with some great ideas for a blog post!

Blog Writing Prompt Technique

– Firstly, write out different keywords relating to your blog topic and cut each one up. E.g. Sound Yoga, Yoga for Weight loss, Pregnancy Yoga etc.
– Next, write out different terms for a blog post format. Cut each one up and gather those in a separate pile. E.g. Educational, review, opinion, step by step, how-to-guide, video etc.

In case you hadn’t guessed, you need a hat! Put the first pile of papers into a hat, shake it up and pick one out. Repeat for the second pile of papers! This will help you to come up with different blog post topics, different blog post formats and, trust me, once you start writing ideas down, more will flow and before you know it, you will have weeks and weeks worth of blog post content ideas.

Looking for more blog post writing ideas? Check out this blog post on the different types of blog post headlines.

7- Create a Regular Blogging Feature

This is a very important blogging for beginners tip, which again can often be overlooked. The main importance of blogging is, well, blogging!

Keep writing and publish your blog posts consistently. If it helps to work to a schedule, choose a set day of the week. If you are busy, you can blog fortnightly or even monthly to prefer but be consistent. However often you decide to blog, make sure that you stick to that schedule and find your blogging rhythm.

By blogging consistently, your readers will build loyalty as they will look forward to that same day when they know that you have something new to share.

Also, don’t forget to add those all-important tags and a category to your blog post!

What do you think of the above blogging for beginners tips?

By working through the above blogging for beginners tips and taking action for each one, this will help you to create solid foundations for your blog, to grow and develop.

Do you want some further blog reading?

I find Jeff Goins to be an inspirational character in the blogging world. In just 2 years, he built his blog and earned over $100,000 by the end of the second year from blogging!

In You Are a Writer, Jeff Goins shares his own story of self-doubt and what it took for him to become a professional writer. He gives you practical steps to improve your writing, get published in magazines, and build a platform that puts you in charge.

Are you suffering from work burnout? Although this post is titled for bloggers, the techniques that I am going to share with you will help you to avoid work burnout whether you are a blogger, freelancer, online entrepreneur or simply tired and low on energy.

I feel that today I am writing this post to not only share these techniques with you but also to remind myself of them. Do you ever learn something, gain awareness of that lesson, know it, but then you do not practice and live by it?

1- 10 Minute Meditation

Some people may specify that meditating at a certain time is the “most effective way”, however, I have found that everybody is different. Whether you prefer a 10-minute meditation in the morning, at lunchtime or before bed, it doesn’t matter when. The important point is to set aside 10 minutes a day, (the equivalent of having a brew!) to gift your mind some stillness and peace. There are many types of meditation and more emerging like its become a fashion trend, but all forms of meditation have 1 underlying truth; a disciplined practice of clearing the mind and finding stillness within.

There are different paths available to assist you in achieving this fundamental truth of meditation. You can focus your attention on breathing to help clear your mind, you can visually focus on a candle, you can listen to some relaxing music or you can find a guided meditation. I don’t know about you but I benefit from having somebody to tell me what to do in a guided meditation, somehow that helps me to switch off.

There are many videos available on YouTube which can help get you started. By dedicating yourself to 10 minutes of meditation practice every day will reward you in so many ways. It will give your mind and brain peace and also relax your body. Helping you to stay strong, focused and mentally alert, which will only benefit your quality of work in the long run.

2- Take a Short Break Every 2 Hours

Working in front of a screen can be demanding in many ways. For instance; extra tension on your neck & shoulders, strain on your eyes staring at an artificial screen for long periods of time. As well as mental strain on your active brain. In addition, as the rest of your body remains stationary, you can become stagnant and achy.

The best way to combat all of that is to allow yourself to take a break every couple of hours. It doesn’t have to be a long break, a simple 10-minute break will be sufficient. If you can, go for a short walk. Getting outside breathing in the air for 10 minutes will work wonders. Allowing you to rest your eyes whilst getting you moving. Furthermore, the oxygen will refresh your brain cells, giving you more energy for effective work.

If a walk is not possible for you, or if it’s raining, practice some Qigong or simply have a short stretch for 10 minutes. Stretching out those achy shoulders, and moving your limbs will get your blood and energy moving, which will help to re-energise you, helping you to produce a higher quality of work. Trust me it will make you feel better!

Again YouTube is a fantastic source to find a short guided video for this. I recommend the below video, which is a 7 minute QiGong practice. This is fantastic to avoid work burnout, as you can do it anywhere. Finally, after a few sessions you won’t need the video which will rest your eyes from the screen. As a result, it will benefit your body and mind in an incredible way, and its only 7 minutes!!

3- Switch Off

Learn to leave work at the office…

This is a very important point to avoid work burnout that I am often guilty of. It is especially important if you work from home. It is quite amusing because most people choose to work for themselves to achieve a better work/ life balance. However, usually, the end result is working longer hours without necessarily getting paid for it! That is a one-way ticket to work burnout. I know what your thinking though; I have so much to do, a have a lot on my mind etc.

By practising the above techniques, they will help you to find peace & stillness, which, by giving your mind and body that space, will re-energise you and result in you having more focus and productivity. Therefore you won’t need to bring your work home with you.

As I work from home, my personal technique to conclude my work day is to walk out the door, imagining walking out the office, and then re-enter my home. Being aware of the power of thoughts can really help you with this, as, if thoughts of work enter your conscious mind, simply observe the thought and then tell yourself mentally, “That is a thought for tomorrow, right now I don’t need that thought.” Thus allowing the thought to pass and continue on with your lovely evening.

4- Drink Plenty Of Water

You may be surprised to see this as a point to avoid work burnout, but don’t underestimate the power of water. We are all after all made up of 75% of water.

Drinking water regularly throughout your day benefits you in a number of ways including;

– Hydrating & refreshing your body and being.

– The ability to perform mental arithmetic is compromised when your fluids are low.

– Drinking a sip of water every 45 minutes will help to increase concentration.

– Your memory will improve if you drink water in the day.

– Water increases the blood flow to your brain. This increases your brains oxygenation and hydration. It also calms your brain.

I won’t go too much into the topic as this is not a blog about health, but drinking lots of caffeine throughout the day won’t aid you to avoid burnout. Caffeine is unnaturally stimulating and, as a drug, messes with your body giving you that cold turkey effect, usually resulting in you ‘needing’ another tea (or coffee!). Try to reduce the amount of caffeine to take, perhaps begin by substituting 1 caffeine drink a day with a herbal tea, or a glass of water… that’s achievable right?

5- Practice Yoga

Yoga is another brilliant beneficial way to avoid work burnout. There are different types of yoga, Hathor yoga is a good place to start for beginners. If you struggle to meditate, practising yoga will help you, as it is a very meditative practice, similar to a moving meditation.

With Yoga, there are a series of positions for stretching, breath is also used when carrying them out. Essentially you stretch into a posture, breath into it to push your body further into the stretch. The stretch is usually held for about 5 breaths and then the body can relax.

This type of practice is great for stretching out those achy tense shoulders. It will help you to clear your mind as your mind is occupied on stretching & breathing. This mental break will help to boost your productivity for work.

6- Exercise

If yoga is not for you, there are many types of exercise to choose from to stimulate and workout your body. As exercise occupies your mind, it will give it a break from thinking about what’s on your to-do list, what email needs sending etc.

What form of exercise to carry out is really up to you. There are the obvious ones; jogging, walking and cycling. If you prefer to go to a gym or place to exercise, you can consider; gym equipment, swimming, martial arts and climbing. Or perhaps competitive sports are more for you such as tennis and squash.

Personally, I believe that you are more likely to get into a routine of exercise if you make it quick and easy to do. Rather than driving, spending money and time to go to a gym, I prefer to workout at home. I find that a combination of pilates, yoga and running, is sufficient to keep in a great shape and avoiding burnout.

The desired routine for exercise is about 30 minutes a day, however, if you don’t currently do that, don’t pressure yourself to achieve that straight away. Set an initial goal of twice a week, slowly increase that to three times a week.

The benefits of exercise, along with the obvious of good health, endurance, strength, better shape, increased confidence, more energy etc. Will help you to balance your mind and body, and good balance means no burnout!

7- Get a Holistic Treatment

As a trained holistic therapist, I can tell you that getting a holistic treatment every other month, (or monthly if you prefer), will greatly assist you to avoid burnout.

There are many treatments available depending on what you would prefer, and more importantly, what you would enjoy.

Here are a few;

– Back massage – perfect for relieving those achy tense muscles from being hunched over the computer

– Reflexology- If you can bear your feet to be massaged, reflexology is a wonderfully relaxing treatment.

– Reiki- A more spiritually inclined treatment, Reiki is powerful for clearing away mental debris and its super relaxing too!

-Acupuncture- This works to balance the flow of energy and Qi in our bodies. The needles aren’t as scary as they look!

How will getting a treatment help me long term? If you imagine yourself as a car. With your car, you drive it around and use it a lot. It gets an MOT check yearly to make sure it can keep going but if you take it for a service, this helps to maintain its use.

Getting a regular holistic treatment is the equivalent of giving yourself a service. In a nutshell, it will help to get rid of your crap, give you some TLC and revitalise you to keep going!

8- Smile

Last but not least remember to smile!

Try not to take yourself so seriously and remember to have fun with your daily life. At the end of the day, we are not here to work, we are here to experience. Do you want your experience to be serious or enjoyable?

Be mindful to smile along the way and invite joy into your experience.

Share a smile with someone and more often than not, they will share a smile back. There have been enough studies carried out to show the positive effect of smiling & laughter for a person.

Smile and enjoy your journey.

It can be so exciting when you first start and launch your blog. However, in hindsight, I would have loved to of had a beginners guide to blogging! When I first launched my blog, I had read so much about blogging and carried out a variety of online courses, that I wanted to do everything at once, to promote my blog, share it and grow it.

My lesson always seems to come back to having patience and trusting that everything works out at the optimum time for you.

And so, I decided to share this post with you today. If you are a beginner blogger, or you have recently launched your blog. I am going to share with you 11 super easy small steps, that will help to share and grow your blog!

A Beginners Guide To Blogging: 11 Super Tips

Sitemap

This is such an important step for a new blog and this basically involves creating a sitemap for your blog, and submitting your sitemap to search engines such as Google, for indexing. By carrying out this important step, this will allow Google to index your blog, and you will start the process of appearing in search engine results pages. Very important if you want people to find your blog!

So what is a sitemap? A sitemap is usually written in XML code, there are many free plugins which create the sitemap for you, making it super easy!

This link is the Google Sitemap plugin, which automatically generates an XML sitemap for your WordPress website, and helps search engines index your blog. https://wordpress.org/plugins/google-sitemap-plugin/

Integrate Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a brilliant tool to monitor how many people are viewing your website, where you traffic is coming from; organic search, social, direct etc. The great thing about Google Analytics is that, although it has so many useful features to help understand and grow your traffic, you dont need to know exactly how to use Google Analytics to benefit from it! I find it extremely useful knowing how much monthly traffic my blog receives, as it allows me to make SMART targets and goals to increase this.

Integrating Google Analtics onto your blog is super easy. Simply go to Google Analytics, create a free account and add your website. You will receive a unique piece of code which you will need to enter into the head section of your blog. As I use the DIVI theme for my blog, there is a dedicated head section making this easy. If you do not use the DIVI theme, you can install a free headers and footers plugin to add this code.

Once you have added the code from Google Analytics to your blog, it will take a few weeks for Google Analytics to gather data from your website visitors.

Site Title & Description

By creating a keyword rich site title and description for your blog, this will help your blog to rank higher in search engines, to searches using those keywords. For e.g. if you blog about yoga. Your site title may sound like, ” Yoga Blog | Yoga Health & Wellness”

There are some great plugins making it easier for you to enter in this information, such as Yoast SEO.

Social Media Accounts

Sharing your blog content on social media is a great way to promote your blog and gain more visitors to your blog. There are plugins available where you can add social sharing icons to your blog posts, Monarch is a great plugin for this.

I would also recommend including social icons for the accounts that you currently use, where people can follow the link to see your profile, and then follow you.

Topic Ideas

If you have already carried out the above tasks, great! You are well on your way to developing a successful blog for people to find and enjoy.

Another super useful task to do at this point is to focus on what you want to achieve from your blog; what do you want write about? What do you want to share? It is very useful to have a brainstorming session, answering these questions but allow yourself to keep writing down ideas! Once you have a load of ideas down, you can begin to group these ideas by category / topic and begin to see a pattern emerging.

A lot of successful bloggers advise that it is best to focus your blog on a niche topic. Using our previous example of yoga, if you are looking to read more about yoga, which of the following blogs would you prefer from below;

– A yoga and fitness blog – blogging about yoga, fitness and wellness.

– A yoga and lifestyle blog- Blogging about yoga, food, travel, photography and gardening.

By narrowing down your topic and blog category, it makes it easier to attract more readers to your blog, who want to hear what you have to say!

Branding

As your blog begins to grow, it will start to take on its own personna and branding will really help to develop this! By this point, you are receiving visitors to your blog, you are sharing posts on social media, you have identified your key topic and highlighted those keywords in your site title & description. Now is a perfect point to take that identity one step further, and create branding. This can include; a site logo, specific colours, typography and using specific fonts in your blog. You do not have to have a degree in graphic design to be able to create a simple but effective branding strategy.

There are some awesome tools out there (free!) which can help you achieve this. I recommend my favorite tool to get you started; Canva!

Canva is fantastic. You can create a free account, Canva offers existing templates for projects such as; logo design, social media imagery, Pinterest graphics etc. It is a simple interface with lots of free templates and features to help get you started. Have fun, play around and begin creating your personal branding for your blog!

FavIcon

If you are not familiar with a favicon, this is the icon that appears in browser tabs and bookmarks. The favicon is usually 16 x 16 pixels square, and helps to create that unique identity and branding to your blog.

Favicon Generator – A useful tool where you can enter in your blog URL and view how your Favicon appears on different devices; IPhone, Android, desktop browsers etc. https://realfavicongenerator.net/

Faviconer – A useful website where you can upload an image and save it in the correct format for a Favicon (.ico) http://www.faviconer.com/

Once you have your Favicon, this is usually saved to the root (main) folder, if you are using FTP. Alternately for WordPress blogs, there are plugins available which help you to load your Favicon such as; Favicon by Real Favicon Generator https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/favicon-by-realfavicongenerator/

About Page

If you do not already have an about page, now is a great time to create one. An about page is so useful because it allows visitors to get a deeper insight to your blog, which will help them to relate and connect with you, building that all important relationship.

There is alot of information on what the “Best about page” should be. From my experience, I have narrowed this down to the following;

– A clear clean image of yourself, this helps visitors to connect with you and see the face behind the writing.

– A short description about you, your story and what has inspired you or lead you to create your blog. With this description, although it is about you, it is important to relate this to your audience. For e.g. If you have come across a problem related with your blog, solved that problem, and now you want to share how you did it on your blog, so that readers can solve their problems to. Tell your audience. Find a way to connect your story with theirs, so that they can connect with you and feel inspired to want to follow your blog.

– What readers can expect to find on your blog.

– Perhaps include some links to posts that you have already written, for e.g. the best of [name of your blog]

Optin Forms

I’m sure you have come across optin forms on other blogs. These can be; pop-ups, signup forms in a sidebar, sign-up forms inside a blog post etc.

By this point in your blog, if you have done all of the above, the most important challenge now is to get readers to come back. The best way to do this is by growing your email list and getting the to subscribe to your bllog email list, and the best way to do this is through optin forms.

How do I Add Optin Forms To My Blog?

Well you have a few options, and as with options, some are better than others. For a free basic option, there are plugins available where you can include a sidebar optin and begin to generate some email signups. The downside of this option is that the forms are usually quite generic, limiting on design and where you can place them.

Another option, If you are a member of Elegant Themes, and use the DIVI theme, (which is an amazing WordPress theme), is Bloom.

By selecting the package with the plugin upgrade, you have access to the BLOOM plugin. This is a brilliant feature where you can include opt-ins in a variety of ways, including; pop-ups, header opt-ins, sidebar opt-ins etc. Click here for further information on Elegant Themes, DIVI and the BLOOM plugin!

Other companys that offer different packages for optins include; Leadpages and https://sumo.com/.

Any optin form is better than nothing, and so if you begin with a free plugin, great! Get building your email subscribers list with optin forms!

Freebie

This follows on from point 9 on optins. You may find that after some time of using an optin saying, “Subscribe for latest news and posts”, that you dont actually receive many subscribers. Generally, people need to have more of an incentive to do what you tell them, and thats where freebies come in!

You can create a freebie to utilise with your optin forms, and give your readers something for subscribing. The benefits of this is that it will grow your email list much quicker, and your email list is basically a list of potential customers for you to target. A freebie does not have to take alot of time to create and depends on what your blog topic/ niche is about. Here are some freebie ideas for you;

– ebook — It doesnt have to be hundreds of pages, remember quality over quantity

– A free email course – If you have something valuable to teach / share, this may be a great freebie idea!

– A checklist pdf- Quick to create, and useful for readers. For e.g. if you are a food blogger, you could give away a free recipe shopping list for people to subscribe.

– If you offer a service, you could offer a discount to email subscribers. Giving them a coupon code for their discount upon subscribing.

Get creative!

Blog titles can either catch a readers eye instantly or be lost in the noise of other articles. If you can consistently create a catchy blog title to attract your reader, the battle is half won!

6 Types of Blog Titles That Attract Readers

1. Balanced Phrase

[X] [KEYWORD PHRASE] [CURIOSITY PHRASE]

With the balanced phrase blog title, this is designed to not only attract readers but to also tick the correct boxes for SEO purposes. Which will help your blog post rank high in search engine results pages (SERP’s), such as Google, Yahoo and Bing.

The “X” would represent a number. The “KEYWORD PHRASE”, as you can probably guess, is where you can include your main keyword for your blog topic; this will help you gain a better ranking in SERP’s. Finally the “CURIOSITY PHRASE” is what will attract your readers, to want to read more.

E.g. “10 Blog Titles That Work every time They Are Tried”.

2. Theatrical Effect

This blog post title is aimed for those who are attracted to drama and includes major terms such as; warning, negative, drastic etc.

E.g. “8 Warning Signs That Your Website Is Outdated”.

3. It’s An Enigma…

The classic enigmatic blog post title, designed to create mystery is guaranteed to draw your readers in, who cannot resist the temptation.

E.g. “The Secret To Tone Your Abs”. “Little Known Ways To Gain Repeat Readers”.

This headline comprises the [MYSTERIOUS HOOK] together with your [BLOG POST KEYWORD]

4. Problem Solver

This blog post headline is perfect if you are sharing tips, a tutorial, or some really useful information. The classic, “How To” post is well known for attracting readers. You can extend this technique by adding a time frame.

E.g. “How To Complete a Full Body Workout In 20 Minutes”.

We are in a ‘rat race’ society, consumed with time. If you can help to solve somebodies problem within a certain time, you are sure to gain interest.

5. Piggyback Blog Title

If your blog post utilises information or tips from a well-known character, be sure to include their reference in your title.

E.g. [Famous Person]Top 10 Tips For ________ “

Oprah Winfrey’s Top 10 Tips For Succeeding In Life”.

6. Common Errors

Highlighting potential mistakes that your readers could be making is bound to get their attention, and make them want to read more in your blog post.

E.g. “3 [Blog Topic] Mistakes That Your Probably Making Today”.

I hope that these blog titles have been useful for you. Which blog title idea is your favourite? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time,
